All
about Skin Cancer
One
in five Americans will develop skin cancer. It is the most common cancer
in the world today and is increasing at an epidemic rate.
- The
sun's ultraviolet rays are responsible for more than 90 percent of all
skin cancers. The longer you are in the sun without protection, the greater
the danger.
- Basal
cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the two most common forms
of skin cancer, and malignant melanomas the most life-threatening.
- Actinic
Keratosis, an abnormal skin growth, is a precancer that can develop into
skin cancer.
- Early
detection and prompt treatment can result in a complete cure for all types
of skin cancer.
Skin
Cancer is preventable
Your
best defense is to follow these sun-protection tips:
•
Avoid the sun from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat.
• Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen - SPF 15 or higher.
• Stay out of tanning salons.
• Examine your skin regularly.
While
only a doctor can tell if you have skin cancer, your skin can tell you when
to see a doctor.
