Our skin is our largest and most visible organ. Just like our other organ systems  it benefits from regular check ups and preventive care.

If you are concerned about sun damage to your skin, have questions about moles or growths, we invite you to make an appointment for a skin check-up during which we will perform a survey for cancerous and precancerous conditions with particular attention to the areas of your concern. See also: how to determine your skin type, how to perform your own skin survey, "All about Skin Cancer" , how to recognize a melanoma,  and "Danger: Sunburn"
For information on a safe sunless tan visit sunless.com

We do cryosurgery for precancerous lesions and warts, shave and punch biopsies of questionable skin growths, curretting and electrocautery when indicated, incise and drain abscesses, and remove cysts, including scalp cysts (pilar cysts). Dr. Breder has a special interest in these procedures and recently attended a national seminar for further training.

We also do cosmetic procedures such as removal of skin tags and tiny spider veins on the face. These are done with a electrosurgical device, using brief applications (less than a second) of a very low, almost painless current. Please note: cosmetic procedure are usually not covered by your insurance and need to be paid for at time of visit.

We are experienced in diagnosing and treatment of such common conditions as

  • acne and rosacea (check here for treatment of acne and rosacea)
  • eczema
  • warts (check below for new OTC wart remover "Wartner")
  • precancerous lesions
  • psoriasis
  • poison ivy and other types of contact dermatitis
  • hives
  • ringworm, yeast and other fungus infections
  • drug eruptions
  • insect bites and infestations
  • impetigo and other bacterial skin infections
  • abscesses, boils, and cysts on body or scalp

For selected hard-to-find skin care products, such as camouflage make-up for vitiligo and portwine stains, you may want to visit Delasco Consumer Products We are mentioning this site because of its good reputation among dermatologists. Another reputable product line for concealing acne scars, tatoos, portwine stains, rosacea, psoriasis, stretch marks and other blemishes is Dermablend. We have no financial interest in either of these companies.

There is a new OTC wart remover called Wartner. It's the first "cryo- or freeze-therapy" wart treatment available OTC. It's an aerosol spray that contains dimethyl ether and propane. Wartner is sprayed onto a foam applicator...the applicator cools...it's applied to the wart...and the wart freezes. It seems to work about as well as using liquid nitrogen to freeze warts. It might also be better tolerated because Wartner doesn't get as cold as liquid nitrogen. You should use Wartner on common warts only...not genital or facial warts. It costs $20...and provides about 10 applications. Apply it just once to the wart...then reapply if it doesn't fall off after 10 days.

Dermadoctor.com has a nice list of articles on various skin conditions. It is a commercial site and sells skin care products; we are not endorsing those.
