Stay on your feet: Preventing Falls

Among the perils of getting older, falling and breaking bones is a major hazard. Hip fractures are a frequent cause of admission to a nursing home. Besides preventing osteoporosis with appropriate intake of calcium and vitamin D, as well with medications when indicated, you need to make your home fall-safe. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons recommends the following steps:

      • Install sturdy hand rails on all stairways and grab bars in the bathroom.
      • Cover stairs with tightly woven carpet or nonslip treads.
      • Avoid climbing and reaching up to high shelves.
      • Use a step stool with handrails.
      • Do not wax floors and always clean up after spills as soon as they happen.
      • Wear low-heeled shoes with nonskid soles. Avoid thick, heavy soles and keep laces tied so that the shoes fit snugly.
      • Try not to use a bed that is too high, and before getting out of bed, sit on the edge for a few minutes to be sure you are not dizzy.

If you have not yet had a bone density test, talk to your doctor about getting one.
