The
Women's Health Initiative study showed that postmenopausal
estrogen replacement therapy increases the risk of heart disease, stroke,
pulmonary embolism and breast cancer. Another study, the HERS study, looked at
quality-of- life issues and found that postmenopausal hormone therapy improves
quality of life only for women with bothersome vasomotor flushing, even
in older women who continue to have vasomotor symptoms that interfere with their
lives. For an overview see: Hormone
Replacement for the New Millennium discussing perimenopause, hormone replacement
for vasomotor symptoms, alternatives to hormone replacement, issues of libido
and use of androgens, and osteoporosis
